Using Zoom for your video conferencing needs allows you to take advantage of the many different things it allows you to do. One of these features includes setting up a Zoom meeting password in order to help protect your virtual conversations.

If you’re struggling to figure out how to set up a Zoom.us meeting password, we’re here to help.

What is covered in this article

Before we get into how to change your Zoom password for a meeting, let’s dive into what exactly it’s used for.

What is a Zoom meeting password?

A Zoom meeting password is a series of characters (letters and numbers) used to access a Zoom meeting. Passwords add a level of security and protection for a specific meeting or a set of recurring meetings. Zoom meeting passwords can be enabled for individuals, groups, or at the account level, and are currently required for every meeting.

As of May 2020, all meetings require a password. This is part of Zoom’s effort to improve security for the video-conferencing app.

Using a Zoom meeting password

There are a lot of different situations that allow for you to use a Zoom password for a meeting. Here are the different scenarios where you’ll be able to set one up.

  • Require a password when scheduling a new meeting (can also edit to require a password for previously scheduled meetings)
  • Require a password for instant meetings
  • Require a password when using your Personal Meeting ID or PMI (you have the option to set this for meetings where participants can join before the host or all meetings)
  • Embed the password within the meeting link so invitees can easily join
  • Require a password for participants calling in using their phone

If you’ve been invited to a meeting that requires a password, you will be able to find it within the invitation or embedded into the meeting link (if the host has allowed for this). If you cannot locate the password, message the meeting host before the meeting to clarify.
